REPORT: Sixers Owners Coerced Hinkie To Pick Okafor Over Godzingas To Not Piss Off Fanbase
NYP – Sources have indicated Philly ownership was gung-ho to take one of the Big 3 — Karl-Anthony Towns, Jahlil Okafor or D’Angelo Russell — because taking another unknown European project may not have sat well with a disenchanted fan base.
OK. I get it. This franchise has been giving us the “Together We Tank Build” and “Trust The Process” jazz for almost 3 full years now. We’ve sat back very patiently taking it up the tailpipe while saying it’s the right move. I don’t hate on the owners for wanting essentially a sure thing (at the time) in Okafor/Russel/Towns over a literally transparent kid from Latvia. The thing that chaps my ass is owners using their influence to these decisions good for business over the basketball minds they hired to do what’s right for the team. Would Hinkie have chosen Godzingas if he wasn’t feeling the heat? Maybe. Maybe not (Jerry Colango’s might have because he’s an international savant when it comes to ball). But don’t Daniel Snyder your dick into your employee’s oatmeal. You hired them to do a job, let them do it. And even though hindsight is 20/20, I’m still fine with the Okafor pick. He’s still a stud and nobody, and I mean NOBODY thought Portzingas was going to be this fresh this fast.
And yes, at the time of the draft the Sixers owners were 100% spot on. This city would’ve erupted if they selected that Transylvanian stick figure.
